French Revolutionary officer, Alexandre Moreau de Jonnes, is languishing on an English prison hulk as a prisoner of war. He spends his time documenting his adventures fighting for France. This story focuses on his months as an artillery officer training Caribs in their fight to drive the English from St. Vincent Island. He becomes close friends with Pakiri, a Red Carib chief, and falls in love with Eliama, Pakiri’s daughter, who was raised by French nuns on Martinique. De Jonnes has adventures on St. Vincent, participates in the failed attack on Kingstown, is sent as a spy to Martinique, and returns to St. Vincent, where he witnesses the final defeat of the French and Carib forces on the island.
