Kalinago Summary & Pictures

Sigu is a Kalinago (Carib) living on the Orinoco Delta of what is today Venezuela. His people are under the domination of the Arawaks, who have a powerful chiefdom up river and demand yearly tribute in goods, food, young women, and labor. Sigu resents this and is in conflict with his father, who has given up resisting the demands of the powerful Arawak chiefdom. He is drafted to labor at the Arawak capital where he meets other young men resentful of the Arawaks. He leads his fellow young men when they are forced to join an Arawak river fleet that raids a rival chiefdom down river. Sigu plays a major role in the victory over this chiefdom’s forces. He resents the lack of compensation for their efforts and continues to rail against the unreasonable demands of the Arawaks. To support his village he takes to trading and raiding down river, breaking the established truce. When the tribute fleet arrives Sigu leads the other young men in a revolt, killing the Arawaks and their captain. This causes a threat the elders cannot abide. Sigu and is followers are exiled and must leave the delta region. They join others and raid and trade down  river until they reach the coast. They continue up the coast of South America and out into the Caribbean islands until they reach St. Vincent Island, where they establish a new society with captured brides and set traditions that lead to the formation of Island Carib culture.
